The Kenyan government has today returned approximately 35 kilograms of gold seized in Kenya to Tanzania.
The new development comes after President Uhuru Kenyatta pledged to work with his Tanzanian counterpart John Pombe Magufuli in the war against illegal gold trade.
President Kenyatta sent a delegation led by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma, and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji to return the gold, which had been seized by police from the Kenyan side.
The estimated value of the gold is Sh100million. The delegation from Kenya was received by President Magufuli in State House Dar es Salaam.
Shortly after receiving the consignment, the Tanzanian authorities subjected the gold to test, to determine whether it is real.
Reports on Nation indicate that President Kenyatta called Magufuli shortly after the latter received the gold, and promised to continue working with him for the sake of economic growth and peaceful coexistence.
“My brother, I say we continue working together and Kenya and Tanzania has no borders as we agreed. We should help one another to fight corruption and to return money stolen from our people so that we build roads and connect our people to electricity,” Kenyatta said as quoted by Nation.
