The US government is planning to send its troops to Saudi Arabia following last week's oil attacks. The attacks are speculated to have been committed by Iran.

This comes after President Donald Trump's administration's top national security officials held a meeting and decided to send their troops in response to the attack on Saudi's oil facilities.

Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and Gen Joseph F Dunford  Jr on Friday told reporters that the total number of troops who would be deployed has not yet been decided, adding that the mission will be "defensive in nature".

The duo revealed that they are planning on sending air and missile defense system alongside the troops.

 A week ago, Saudi Arabia's Abqaiq and Khurais oil facilities were attacked, affecting global oil supply.

 It was later ascertained by the Kingdom's defense ministry that Iran was behind the attacks. 

The US government also believes the attacks were conducted by Iran.

Iran President Hussein Rouhani has however refuted the allegations. He claimed that the attacks emanated from Yemeni people, adding that it was a retaliatory strike. 

Mohammed Javad Arif, Iran Foreign Minister, noted that Iran had no desire to go into war but noted that the country will not hesitate to protect itself. 

"We will not hesitate to defend ourselves," he tweeted

The US government has now pledged to protect Saudi Arabia from the attacks.
