The accident involving a fourteen-seater Matatu happened at Muumandu area in Machakos constituency.

The vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a gully.

According to Muumandu location chief Douglas Mutavi, the driver and three students are among those who sustained injuries.

Mutavi told the press that the brakes of the vehicle could have failed thus making it hard for the driver to control it.

The vehicle was heading to Nairobi from Makueni.

"The accident happened just 600 metres from Muumandu shopping centre. The driver veered off the road and landed in a gully, the vehicle fell on it's back. Eight people were injured," said Mutavi.

"The passengers said they don't know what transpired because the driver was not overspeeding, maybe the brakes failed," he added.

The chief said that the eight who were injured were taken to Machakos Level Five hospital for treatment.

The vehicle was towed to Machakos police station by traffic police officers.
