It is cited that the cause of the strike is the failure of Nairobi county government under the troubled Governor Mike Sonko to offer a promotion to the health workers as promised.

Brown Ashira the secretary of Kenya Health Professionals Society (KHPS) told a presser that they had signed several agreements with the county management but no promotion letters were issued.

"Our members have suffered psychological loss and damage and have felt discriminated against. We call our members to parade to City Hall after the expiry of the seven days to demand the promotion letter,” he said as quoted.

Efforts by the star to reach the health County Executive Member (CEC) Mohammed Abdikadir on phone bore no fruits.

The health workers had pushed Governor Sonko on November 11, 2019, to promote each one of them to the next immediate job group.

On November 15, 2019, the health workers reached an agreement with Sonko that saw them submit their first promotion letters. The county promised to work on the second phase of promotion, it even put aside sh130 million for promotions in the current financial year.

Their counterparts across the country have also been striking severally due to salary issues.
