A Gusii-based Orange Democratic Movement party blogger Olivia Moraira alias Kabz Nyar Kisii was on Tuesday acquitted by a Nairobi court over hate speech.
For two years now, Olivia has been battling a case against the state where she's accused of demeaning the First Family, a move that saw her locked in Lang'ata prison.
She was first arrested in 2017 during the Supreme Court case between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga.
Sleuths bundled her into a vehicle and drove to Nairobi where she was hurriedly charged and taken to prison awaiting trial.
But on Tuesday, Ms Moraira, who has been depending on legal services from politician Dennis Anyoka, announced her victory on Facebook.
"Live from Milimani law courts.. Kabz Nyar Kisii has been acquitted.. am a free woman once Again. Thanks Wakili Dennis Anyoka for your good services.
"You never got tired of attending court sessions hata kama sikuwa nakulipi. Now lemme go home and mourn my beloved brotherMimi ni mweupe kama pamba," she wrote.
Her arrest sparked controversy with a section of Gusii leaders led by Woman Representative Janet Ong'era accusing the state of unwarranted harassment.
“She is accused of hate speech but ironically the complainant has not been disclosed. We believe this is intimidation targeting our supporters and we will not allow it,” Ms. Ong’era said.
The acquittal comes amid political truce between President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga. The two have been working closely since 2017.
