The Kenya National Private Security Workers Union (KNPSWU) has put on notice private security companies across the country underpaying guards.
Union's Secretary-General Isaac Andabwa says despite the security guards guarding property worth millions of shillings, they are paid peanuts.
“It's sad that some security firms pay their employees as little as Sh6,000 per month without leave or any allowances. What do you expect this person to do with this amount surely?” said Andabwa who spoke to the press in Eldoret town on Thursday after visiting various security firms.
“The minimum wage bill supposed to be paid to security guards is Sh16,000 across the country and any security company doing contrary will face the full force of the law,” he added.
He further cautioned some employees who have been holding meetings rejecting the government’s initiative of giving guards guns saying they are misinformed and won’t succeed.
Andabwa noted that the security guards will undergo training on how to handle the guns and will only use them on special assignments.
He said that employers who are against guards being armed are the ones who have been stealing from their employees, not remitting their NHIF and NSSF contributions and also paying them peanuts.
