A Kenyatta University student, Lucia Wambui Wanjiru has narrated how she struggled from poverty to being able to join the university.
In a video shared on Youtube by former Kiss100 presenter, Caroline Mutoko, the Economic and Finance student explains how she struggled from doing menial jobs.
The ever-smiling Lucy revealed that her mother died when she was still young and with no one to assist her in life, she went to stay with her grandmother who is old and sick.
She struggled with life and finished high school, getting a B+(plus) in KCSE.
"I had a B+ of 73 points. I missed an A- with one point. I was so devastated. I cried for a whole month," Lucy said.
Knowing that there was no one to help her raise her university fees, she decided to do manual works around her home. She used to pick tea at a local farm and also did other menial jobs which earned her Sh200 per day.
All this hustle was to help her raise money to join the university.
By the time she was joining university, she had Sh18,000 plus some cash from her grandmother.
Joining the university was not the end of her struggles as her life continued to be hard. She would skip lunch and only took breakfast and supper.
"I used to eat breakfast, Sh20, then supper Sh23 bob at KU mace," noted the KU student
When her life became harder, she decided to write a fall-off letter. However, when she had just written the letter, a message from Helb indicating that she will be sponsored came.
"The day I drafted that letter, I got a message from Helb saying that I had been identified as a potential Barclays scholarship student," she said.
Lucy is now still in school after securing the scholarship.
