The Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church has recently been making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Among them has been fights and alleged death threats, especially at the Nairobi Central SDA Church, otherwise known as St Maxwell.

A similar case has been witnessed in Kisii County, under the South East Kenya field.

Emerging details now indicate that the push and pull could be linked to the church's property and assets, whose control is being fought for ahead of the church's elections.

Consequently, leaders eyeing leadership positions have been fragmenting the church to get the needed delegates to elect them into power.

Some of them have reportedly already acquired guzzlers in readiness for the campaigns.

The East Kenya Union under which St Maxwell is operating owns among others, a multi-million property in the posh Lavington neighbourhood, several parcels of land in Mombasa and others amounting to millions.

In Kisii, the properties behind the fights include schools, a teachers training college as well as parcels of land, a hospital and the Magutu Complex.

The field partially protrudes into the neighbouring Nyamira County.

However, South Kenya Conference President Dr Julius Bichaga says that there are no fights over wealth in the church, especially under his conference, despite the inability to revive a number of limping institutions.

He told the Standard that it's impossible to misuse church money due to the high number of signatories.

“It is nearly impossible to misuse church money. What we can spend without approval is Sh20,000. The rest of the amount is spent with the approval of more than 10 people,” he said.
