Makueni Member of Parliament Dan Maanzo has come to the defence of President Uhuru Kenyatta against those accusing him of plotting to cling onto power after his retirement.
A section of politicians have accused Uhuru of plotting to prolong his stay in power after his anticipated retirement in 2022, among them Kandara lawmaker Alice Wahome.
Maanzo has now questioned these remarks saying he believes that Uhuru's earlier remarks that he is not interested in another term are genuine.
According to the MP, the constitutional changes Uhuru is pushing for are not aimed at securing him another term but to ensure that he leaves the country with better laws that will enable the country to avoid her recurrent political infightings.
"I think I have read President Kenyatta differently, he stated before that he doesn't want to be in power and I want to believe him. But he has also said that he doesn't want to leave the country in disarray," said Maanzo.
He added that it's now upon the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) task force to come up with amendment proposals that will see the country shun divisive politics for good.
He expressed hope that the team picked by Uhuru and ODM leader Raila Odinga after their March 2018 truce, will come up with good proposals for Kenyans.
"The biggest issue with BBI is how does it bring the country together after divisive elections? I believe the team working on the report will come up with what’s best for Kenyans," he added.
