The Kisumu Employment and Labour Court on Wednesday ordered the county government of Vihiga to pay health workers salaries amounting to Sh280 million.
While delivering his ruling on the matter, Judge Justice Nduma Nderi said that more than 500 health workers are expected to receive their compensation.
This is after 76 of the health workers moved to court after they were shown the door.
The county government had announced the sacking of 528 through a newspaper notice. It, however, distanced itself from the notice issued in December.
“The workers should be paid their salaries from the day they started working, including their salary allowances, extraneous and health allowances,” ruled Justice Nderi.
The medics decided to seek legal attention after the notice was issued to them. The health workers asked the court to direct the county government to retain them in office. The court ruled that the decision of the county government violated the rights of the workers, adding that they should be compensated with immediate effect.
“The county government violated the rights of the complainants in the process of their job termination,” court documents state.
Each of the workers is expected to be paid Sh76, 630 after the court ruling. The county government is yet to respond after the notice from the court.
