The community last produced a presidential candidate in 2002 when Mzee Simeon Nyachae emerged third behind Uhuru Kenyatta and Mwai Kibaki.

Before, former firebrand Kitutu Masaba MP George Anyona had tried twice (1992,97) but did not manage to garner as many votes in the race.

Speaking at Nyamira PAG on Sunday, Solicitor General Ken Ogeto said the community has come of age to try again luck in presidential polls, backing Interior CS Fred Matiang'i.

"We should support Dr Matiang'i at all cost. He has shown exemplary leadership and we should not let him down. The community should prepare for presidency," he said.

While Dr Matiang'i is yet to declare interest, a section of local leaders led by Governor John Nyagarama and Senator Okong'o Mogeni have been pushing for his bid.

And Mr Ogeto, who replaced Njee Muturi last year, asked the community to avoid divisions which can in long run injure ability to fight for national cake.

Further, he said, leaders should mobilise residents to turn out in large numbers, arguing that the figures will be important in resource mobilisation.

"Time has come for us to work together as a team. We should avoid petty differences. During census, let's ensure everyone is counted," he added.

Present during the event were Governors John Nyagarama and James Ongwae, Woman Representative Jerusha Momanyi and township MCA Duke Masira.

Last month, Dr Matiang'i met a host of Gusii leaders at his Nairobi home where he pledged to work closely with them to complete stalled projects.
