Last week meeting between ODM leader Raila Odinga and a section of Gusii leaders at Capitol Hill sought to out things into context on the anticipated constitutional changes, it has emerged.
Under the stewardship of Governors James Ongwae and John Nyagarama, Gusii leaders held a robust meeting with Mr Odinga, which was meant to shape their approach on the referendum.
Days before, Mr Odinga had cautioned the leaders against pushing for Matiang'i presidency, arguing that such approach was detrimental.
"Matiang'i is my son. I know what you want of him. It's too early for politics. There will be no difference between us and them. Let us allow him to work."
And to the effect, Kisii Senator Sam Ongeri sought Mr Odinga's audience so that he could give them overview on what is expected of them.
Dr Fred Matiang'i's plight also dominated the meeting, with Mr Odinga insisting that there is need to expand the cabinet so that other communities are represented.
"Basically, we wanted to know what is expected of us. The BBI also dominated. We wanted to know the expected changes so that we prepare well. It helped us know what we should campaign for," said an MP who attended.
Also, the meeting formally had Jimmy Angwenyi and Samuel Arama officially reconciling with Mr Odinga. The two had stopped working with Odinga for years now.
The MP says the meeting helped them to reorganise themselves so that in 2022, none is caught in competition with the other in elective seats.
"Raila knows what should be changed. His audience was crucial to us. We want to avoid a scenario where some of us join same races at local level."
Kisii Woman Representative Janet Ong'era admitted that the meeting was about current political dispensation, an indication that Mr Odinga took them through expected changes.
