Kidney stones is a type of kidney disease that occurs in the urinary tract.
It develops when calcium combines with certain chemicals identified as oxalate or phosphorus in the urine. These substances normally solidify to form stones.
In most of the cases, people get this disease from the foods they consume on a daily basis.
When suffering from kidney stones, there are certain foods that one should avoid since they exacerbate the condition.
Here are foods you should avoid as highlighted by Natalie Butler, RD, LD, a nutritionist;
1. Cola drinks
Cola is highly enriched with phosphate, a compound that causes the development of more kidney stones. They contribute to the formation of crystal-like substances that in turn amass in the urinary tract. These compounds are extremely perilous in nature and they are believed to create an ideal environment for the formation of these stones.
2. Processed foods
Other foods that may cause more harm than good are processed ones. Try as much as possible to steer clear of eating them if you are suffering from kidney stones. Don't even think of taking them in moderation. Avoid foods like processed meat, canned foods and cakes. They are believed to be endowed with phosphates and oxalate compounds.
3. Spinaches, beets, chocolate, and tea
They are high in oxalates as well. You better eliminate them from your diet wholly. If you need to take them, talk to your doctor and he/she will advise you. If you need to eat them, then make sure you eat foods enriched with calcium to bind to the oxalate before reaching the kidney.
