As battle for 2022 presidential polls intensify, Deputy President William Ruto's team has settled Mt Kenya as the region which will deliver a running mate, Saturday Nation has revealed.
Dr Ruto is confident that the running mate from the populous region will help him get more votes which will enable him to easily get the top seat.
Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has been reportedly identified by Dr Ruto's team as potential running mate ahead of 2022 polls.
Initially, Dr Ruto's team had settled albeit secretly on Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru as running mate but she has since refused to join Tanga Tanga brigade.
Waiguru, a proponent of the handshake, had earlier conceded that she had been approached by two lead candidates to be their running mate.
“I have at least two offers for the deputy president position, but it is not the right time to name the parties,” she said in an exclusive interview with the Nation.
“I see my role as making sure the 10 counties that make up the Mt Kenya region get their rightful place in the next government. We do not want a boardroom appointee to lead the region, but rather a person who is the choice of the people,” she said.
With Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi keen to defend his seat, Dr Ruto is convinced that Kabogo will be a good option given his deep pockets as well.
But in an interview with the Nation, Kabogo has dismissed the new development, insisting that he's not interested in Tanga Tanga and Kieleweke politics and their philosophy.
“I have been approached through proxies to join Tanga Tanga, but I can’t because I don’t subscribe to either Tanga Tanga or Kieleweke politics because these are people who want to continue milking money from both the DP and the President by pretending to popularise their agenda. Who said I cannot be President myself? It is too early to start politicking.”
