Speaking on Tuesday, Kiraitu said the region, which comprises Meru, Embu and Tharaka Nithi counties, should not wait to be handed over power but must strategise and fight to be in control of country's enormous resources.

"I have always said that the national cake is not like the wedding cake that is given to everyone who shows up. It must be fought for," he said.

The veteran politician said it was time for Central Kenya to support Mt Kenya East, having been supported in the past, and being enabled to produce three presidents namely; Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta.

He observed the region has more than 1.5 million votes, but warned that should the leaders fail to unite the whole region, its high population would be unhelpful in search for power.

Governor Kiraitu noted that there was need to follow current political dynamics keenly, so the region can align itself with the side likely to take over power in the 2022 general election.

“We don’t want foolish politics in Meru, let’s do our math well. We need to know who is leading the government so that we know whether we stand to benefit. We must ensure after President Uhuru Kenyatta leaves, we stand to benefit,” he said.
