According to Equity Bank, Eldoret branch manager Lorna Rotich, they received over 362 applications.

"We received over 362 applicants of needy and bright students where only 16 pupils qualified for having come from severe poor backgrounds," said Rotich.

She reiterated that the selection process was vigorous since they were looking for needy students who have achieved a minimum of 350 marks and come from the needy background.

Rotich spoke to the press during the flagging off the Equity Bank Wings to Fly scholarship beneficiaries on Tuesday.

"Most of the beneficiaries are orphans and their situation is pathetic. The selection board was very instrumental because they managed to seek interviews from home to home and got pupils who really qualified," added the Equity Bank Eldoret branch manager.

She said in addition to school tuition fees, the scholars are provided with books, uniforms, transport and pocket money, in a bid to create an environment that will enable them to excel academically.

Uasin Gishu committee Equity Bank Wings to fly selection board chairman who is also the Turbo sub-county Director of Education Kuyo Ole Saoinah said the exercise was transparent and only the deserving pupils were selected.

He called on the beneficiaries to work hard in school.

Turbo MP Janet Sitienei urged other institutions to come out and help other bright and needy students who cannot continue with their education due to financial constraints.

Scholars for 2019 bring the total number of Wings to Fly beneficiaries from the county to 296 since its inception.
