Kenyans on social media have expressed mixed reactions after a technical hitch allowed Safaricom subscribers to purchase data bundles, airtime and other services for free. The problem was discovered at around 2 am on Wednesday morning.
A section of Kenyans on Twitter celebrated the hitch and took advantage of the situation by alerting others of the issue so that they could also receive the free bundles and airtime. According to them, data bundles had become so expensive and therefore they had to make good use of the opportunity while it lasted.
Some of the netizens nonetheless contacted Safaricom through their Twitter handle and brought the matter to their attention. They argued that the increased rate of unemployment in the country is the major cause for people taking part in the 'heist'.
Safaricom responded to the tweets and stated that they were aware of the problem and were working on resolving it.
The netizens also pointed out the fact that the technical hitch happened shortly after Safaricom had been taken to court over issuing expiry dates on data bundles. The company has consequently introduced data bundles that do not have an expiry date.
