The majority of Kenyan social media users have expressed outrage and disappointment with the government after the Cabinet approved the renaming of Boxing Day which is celebrated on December 26 to Utamaduni Day.
A section of the netizens argued that Boxing Day is an international holiday and thus it was not appropriate for the government to rename it.
According to the calendar, Boxing Day which is marked immediately after Christmas Day is set aside for opening of gifts.
A group of the Kenyans on Twitter pointed out that there were more important and urgent matters such as corruption that needed to be addressed instead of renaming a holiday.
The government was accused of neglecting the serious matters that were affecting Kenyans.
A number of the KOT spearheaded by renown investigative journalist John Allan Namu questioned the move to rename the holiday explaining that it was one of the recommendations of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.
They wondered how comes some of the recommendations were being implemented without public participation and civic education as it had been earlier on highlighted.
The cabinet had also approved the renaming of Moi Day to Huduma Day. Majority of the netizens appeared to be more focused on the amendment of Boxing Day.
