Opposition leader Raila Odinga has revisited a proposed plan to construct a Sh22 billion cancer facility.
Raila claims the project which was to be actualized by the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) in Karen was rejected by the Cabinet eight years ago.
Speaking in Kisumu during the burial of Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso, Raila noted that the proposed project was to also act as a centre for research.
"When we were in government Mr President, Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o (then the minister for health) came up with a programme to create a centre of excellence; a centre for research and management for diseases like cancer,” said Raila as quoted by the Standard.
Raila revealed that a piece of land had even been set aside for the construction of the facility.
“There was even land that had been identified for it. But because of ignorance, it was opposed by other members of Cabinet and it never saw the light of the day," he added.
Raila was expressing his support for Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o's bid to President Uhuru Kenyatta to have the plan revived.
“What Prof Nyong’o is saying is known very well. He has the details. He is able to share the information with your government and if we follow that route, you will be able to set up a proper facility that will help us to manage cancer that is claiming so many of our people,” added Raila.
This comes after Kibra Member of Parliament Ken Okoth and Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore succumbed to cancer.
