Gatundu South Member of Parliament Moses Kuria has poured cold water on claims that President Uhuru Kenyatta might stay longer in power, past his expected retirement in 2022.

Such claims have been made by COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli and former Jubilee Party Vice Chair David Murathe, who have said that Uhuru is still too young to go into retirement.

However, the lawmaker on Tuesday dismissed the remarks, stating that Uhuru, being a gentleman, will not seek avenues to retain himself in power, and will willingly exit power.

"Mwaka wa 2022 (in the year) our president is a gentleman and he is going home," he said at the burial of Martha Kirigo Gachagua, mother to Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua in Mathira.

The lawmaker said that being Uhuru's Member of Parliament, his remarks should be taken seriously, stating that his remarks carry with them authority as Uhuru is his constituent.

"Take it from the authority of his Member if Parliament. Na hiyo debate iishie hapo (let that debate end at that)," he added.

Similar remarks about Uhuru's possible stay in power have been made by nominated senator Beth Mugo and former Kwanza MP Noah Wekesa.

Last week, Murathe hinted that Uhuru could bounce back as the Prime Minister, should the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) amendments sail through.
