The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) has commenced investigations against Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi over claims of abuse of office.
In a letter, EACC requested Elachi to respond to claims of irregularly appointing acting County Assembly Clerk Monica Muthambi.
The EACC also wants Elachi to shed more light on the ejection of former County Assembly Clerk Jacob Ngwele, and explain why he is yet to be reinstated despite an existing court order.
In addition, EACC is also investigating Elachi over the constitution of the County Public Service bOard, which she chairs, thanks to her role as County Assembly Speaker.
“The speaker, in arbitrary abuse of her office, irregularly constituted the board in October at a time a functional gazetted one was in office," EACC's letter read in part.
“It is further alleged that the said board, irregularly constituted, proceeded to approve the appointment of one Ms Monica Muthami, the principal clerk assistant as the acting assembly clerk effective October 30th, besides making other irregular appointments and promotions,” EACC added.
Elachi was reportedly given seven days to responds to the claims, but had not responded as at the time of publishing.
In an interview with Standard, EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak said the agency will not leave any stone un-turned at City Hall.
“EACC is committed to ensuring that there is proper realisation of the total accountability and transparency of the county government.
"EACC is targeting errant senior county officials who are known to have been engaging in corrupt activities and other malpractices," he said.
