It is a photo that shows that no condition is permanent and that people can overcome difficult circumstances.

The county boss, in the caption, says the photo was taken when he was 21 or 22 years old.

He was then a student in the United States where he had gone to pursue his studies on a scholarship.

Mutua had left his parents behind in Kawangware where they were staying in a shack.

"Throwback as a younger man of 21/22 while a student in Washington State, USA on scholarship. God has really blessed me. I left my parents and sister Anne in a wooden shack with soil flooring and a tricky pit latrine (Riruta Satellite/ Kawangware) and traveled to the United States, wearing Mitumba clothes from Gikomba to study so that I could change Kenya for the better. Praise be to God," Mutua's Facebook read.

In spite of his difficult background, Mutua went on to become the government spokesperson under the Kibaki administration. In 2013, he was elected as the governor of Machakos on a Wiper party ticket.

Dr Alfred Mutua is on his second and final term as governor and is expected to vie for the presidency in 2022.
