Lawyer Donald Kipkorir has castigated Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei for pushing for immunity of governors and deputies accused of graft.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Kipkorir said that there have been claims that leaders have been forced to change the law to benefit ODM Leader Raila Amolo Odinga but this time around things are different.
He said that governors and their deputies must be accountable to the people who elected them.
The controversial lawyer argued that the failure to put the governors on their toes will make them misuse their powers at the expense of development.
“They keep saying that we keep changing the Constitution for one man yet the Constitution affects all... But now, without shame, they want to change the law to give Immunity to the DP & Governors ... It’s a law that won’t take off as it violates the Constitution,” Kipkorir tweeted.
The Senator has said that prosecution of governors and their deputies amounts to an attempt to kill devolution in the country.
“The ruling against the three governors shows devolution is under threat; we have even seen some government operatives addressing governors as provincial commissioners while the courts have issued rulings to appease the Executive," Cherargei stated as quoted by Nation.
The debate for governors' immunity has been fueled after governord Mike Sonko (Nairobi), Ferdinard Waititu (Kiambu) and Moses Kassaine (Samburu) were barred from office over graft charges that they are currently facing.
