The COTU boss on Sunday warned that the Catholic Church has veered off social responsibilities, adding that the situation could be catastrophic in coming years.

His statement comes days after a section of Catholic Bishops issued new rules that regulates donations made to the church by politicians, a move that has brought about mixed reactions.

“We shall keep a record of any gift to a religious leader exceeding Sh50,000. All gifts should be acknowledged by a letter,” the statement spelled out.

They said contributions to fundraisers across the churches will be done by mobile money transfer or, preferably, by cheque to avoid the handling of large amounts of cash, and give a clear trail of the donors.

But at Bukwala SDA Church, Atwoli threatened to name a number of Bishops who he insists are beneficiaries of corruption money in church.

"Catholic Bishops are very corrupt. The leadership realised just the other day. They could be given Sh5 million then the donar comes back and takes Sh4 million. My Catholic denomination has condoned corruption," he said.

According to him, young Bishops are to blame for the vice, arguing that they are responsible for pushing followers to contribute. He warned that in coming years, many Kenyans may join Islamic religion.

"I can give you the names of Catholic Bishops who were poor before engaging in corruption. But I thank the leadership for realising that. Some of those Bishops benefited from the money. If we are not careful, people would covert to Islam," he said.

Currently, Kenya is 80 per cent Christian nation with 20 per cent subscribing to other religions. The country however, allows for freedom of worshipping.
