President Uhuru Kenyatta has asked the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to put in place measures to ensure increased tax collection.
Speaking on Tuesday at Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi when he presided over the 2019 Annual Taxpayers Day, Uhuru said patriotic Kenyans pay taxes.
He noted that through payment of taxes, Kenya is on the verge of realising it's development goals, adding that non-compliant Kenyans will face the consequences.
“Our ability to collect taxes has enabled us chart our own course as a nation. This event celebrates not just the big tax payers, but all who contribute to nation building by paying taxes and doing so on time…To the minority, you will soon face the consequences(chuma chenu ki motoni)," he said.
"Our goals can be realised only if our nation has enough resources to execute that which it has laid out 'Tulipe ushuru tujitegemee' is very apt for a free and democratic state such as Kenya," he added.
President Kenyatta urged the authority to strive and close all loop holes affecting tax collection in the country.
"There is still room for improvement; increasing the tax payers pool, sealing the leakage points and dealing with tax evaders," he said.
