Police in Kisumu are investigating an incident in which an officer shot her colleague and a resident on Monday.

The officer attached to Kiboswa Administration Police camp had gone to rescue three people who had been robbed over Sh2 million. 

The corporal and her colleague went to the robbery scene after hearing gunshots where two businesswomen had been robbed Sh2,025,700.

However, by the time they arrived at the scene, the three robbers had fled with the cash.

"The police officers were on duty at the Safaricom mast when they heard gunshots fired by the robbers. They rushed there but the robbers had vanished. As they interrogated people at the scene the female officer's gun discharged a bullet injuring her colleague and a villager," read a report seen by the Standard.

The officer who was shot sustained injuries on both her thighs while the villager was injured in the abdomen.

The two have been admitted to the Kisumu Specialist Hospital.

Kisumu County Police Commander Benson Maweu who confirmed the incident stated that the robbers had ordered the businesswomen to surrender their cash. 

He said they shot in the air after taking the cash and fled on a motorbike, adding that six cartridges were recovered from the scene. 

According to the police boss, the robbers had been trailing the women and pounced on them as they entered the Dago PAG Church compound. 

He further confirmed that the officer who fired the shots has been disarmed and is currently in police custody. 

Maweu said that an inquest has been launched into the shooting.
