The Kenya Power has warned that buildings which have been constructed under high voltage power lines in Nakuru County will be demolished.
Kenya Power Central Rift way-leave officer Daisy Chumba said at least 53 houses located on the 6.5 kilometres stretch from Kaptembwo to Lanet power station have been marked for demotion.
The exercise which is expected to start when the notice expires will see buildings being brought down to create a safe space for maintenance of the lines.
Kenya Power had issued the notice to residents in the affected areas on October 4 which expires on October 11.
Chumba said the illegal structures will be demolished and beacons placed along the way-leave to prevent further encroachment.
“Both temporary and permanent structures under the lines will be pulled down to avert danger. We have our own surveyors who are mapping the way-leave and placing beacons using a map acquired from Ministry of Lands,” she said as quoted by Standard Digital.
Chumba noted that despite warnings and sensitization meetings, residents have continued to put up structures near electricity lines.
“Kenya Power and other stakeholders have conducted several sensitisation meetings with locals, informing them on dangers they pose themselves to, but they have continued to defy the order to move,” she added.
Those who are found guilty of infringement on Kenya Power’s Way-leave corridor risk a fine of not less than Sh1 million or one-year imprisonment.
