Tiaty Member of Parliament William Kamket has shared his perspective on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
Speaking on Saturday at the Mama Ngina Waterfront in Mombasa County, the outspoken Kenya African National Union (KANU) legislator called for the initiative to be transmuted into a political party.
The party, he said, would contest in the upcoming 2022 elections.
"When we are through with the constitutional referendum, I would like the BBI to be a party, a national party that will lead Kenya going forward. (Tukishamalizana na maneno ya katiba, hiyo BBI ningependa iwe chama, chama ya kitaifa ambayo itakuja kuongoza Kenya tukisonga mbele, " William Kamket said.
Should the BBI be turned into a political party, it would not be the first time that a constitutional referendum has led to the birth of a political outfit.
Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), a mainstay of Kenya's political landscape, was born after the Yes and No referendum in which the orange side carried the day.
President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, the chief exponents of BBI, have not pronounced themselves on the vexed question of a BBI political party.
Unlike the Yes and No referendum which led to the total overhaul of the Constitution, the BBI referendum will seek the amendment of certain parts of the supreme law.
The BBI report was launched to members of the public over a month ago by President Uhuru Kenyatta at the historic Bomas of Kenya.
