250 adult learners are among the 23,581 candidates in Uasin Gishu County sitting the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations.

37 inmates from Eldoret and Ngeria GK prisons are also sitting the examination.

Twenty-seven-year-old Susan Kagea who is serving a life sentence after an Eldoret court found her guilty of abortion, said she is optimistic of excelling in the national exam.

“My prayer is that I score 400 marks in this exam," said Kagea who has completed the first year of her sentence.

Lelei Rose, 46, who pleaded guilty to a charge of abducting a one-month-old baby in Nandi also exuded confidence that she will perform well in the exam.

Rose said she hopes to score over 300 marks.

Corporal William Isoe, the officer in charge of the inmates, said he is optimistic that this year’s candidates will post better results compared to previous years.

Last year, the top inmate scored 357 marks out of the possible 500.

"The current class might surprise us with good results," said Isoe at the Eldoret GK Prisons on Monday.
