The sugar was nabbed at the Khetia's supermarket stores along the Uganda road in Eldoret town following a police raid.

"I want to confirm that we have nabbed 252 bags of Brazilian sugar and we have commenced investigation together with Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to verify the source and the quality of sugar," Eldoret West OCPD Samuel Mutunga told the press.

"We have heard and read on the media on contraband sugar which has been circulating in various parts of the country and we are not taking any chances this having to verify the same," he added.

Mutunga said KRA officials and other relevant authorities will be sampling the sugar beginning Tuesday to ascertain its origin and whether it is safe for human consumption.

He, however, urged residents to stay vigilant and and act as their watchdog by reporting any product they suspect to be fake and promised to take stern actions against those involved.

Recently police have nabbed contraband sugar in Machakos, Ol Kalou and Eastleigh suspected to contain mercury which is harmful for human consumption.
