The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) in collaboration with the County government of Uasin Gishu have begun an initiative aimed at increasing the forest cover.
The initiative is targeting to plant at least 250 million trees by the year 2022.
Speaking when he commissioned the programme at Timboroa forest on Wednesday, the County Forest Officer William Kiprono said that the exercise seeks to help the country attain the 10 percent tree cover threshold as stipulated in the constitution.
“We are expecting by the end of today to have planted 18,000 trees on a 25 hectares piece of land," said Kiprono.
By around 12 noon, the team had already planted about 11.4 hectares out of the expected 25l.
“I want to applaud the County residents of Uasin Gishu for turning up in large numbers to ensure they help to restore the ecosystem by planting trees," noted Kiprono.
He appealed to the residents, churches, schools and non-governmental organizations to join them in the tree planting process to restore to forest covers in the County.
“We are putting in place measures to curb cases of illegal logging," said the County forest officer.
He further warned culprits engaging in forest destruction activities that their time is up and they will face the full arm of the law.
