The secretary of the National Building Inspectorate Moses Nyakiongora has weighed in on the Precious Talent Academy school tragedy that claimed the lives of seven students.
Speaking to members of the press on Monday moments after the shocking tragedy, Nyakiongora said there were scores of unsafe buildings in the capital Nairobi.
He assured the Kenyan public that the inspectorate was working round the clock to ensure those behind the unsafe buildings are brought to book, alluding to the possibility that the school tragedy might have been caused by structural issues in the building that collapsed.
“As the Inspectorate, we must have our eyes open…We have unsafe buildings in Nairobi. We need to work together to eliminate such ‘wakoras’ and conmen developers and contractors," Moses Nyakiongora said.
His words come amid shock among Kenyans over the deadly tragedy.
Investigations have been launched by law enforcement agencies to determine what caused the deadly collapsed.
It has not been definitively confirmed that structural issues were behind the collapse, even though speculation is rife that the building lacked structural integrity.
The survivors of the tragedy were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to undergo treatment.
