Kisumu County has launched a five-year health plan that aims to address the problem of poor sanitation. County director of Health Lusi Ojwang said the County Health Sector Strategic and Investment Plan (2014-2017) launched Tuesday was going to realign the ministry’s fight against sanitation diseases from treatment to prevention. “Treatment of diseases is very expensive and our focus is to ensure that we have a good preventive measure to not only enable us save money, but also save lives,” he said. Ojwang said that the county will focus on the eradicating poor sanitation by working with various ministries and departments to achieve a holistic approach. “As a county government, we are one. This health plan will incorporate all the sectors and ministries to help achieve it,” he said. He added that the county was also in consultation with manufacturers of hand washing liquid to start a hand washing campaign among school going children. “In conjunction with the Ministry of Education, our aim is to start a campaign to teach our children from a tender age the need to wash their hands regularly,” he added.
