Mugumoini location’s chief Richard Juma on Wednesday refuted claims of rising cases of insecurity on the Southern Bypass which have recently been attributed to thugs from Kibera slums.

The chief has played down claims that thugs continuously terrorise Lang’ata residents before escaping to Kibera slums. This follows an incident that occurred on Monday where the Director of Rasasi Investment Moses Muchangi was shot dead by an unknown gang.

“The bypass is not hostile as being portrayed. The police officers are manning the area at all times and residents should not panic. The incident that occurred on Monday was unfortunate and we cannot say that those who killed the Rasasi director were from Kibera. It seems that the thugs had been trailing him for a while before they finally killed him. He was shot at midmorning by the notorious gang while in his car and probably they came from a far area,” said Juma.

“We can’t really shift blames that all the thugs come from Kibera to rob pedestrians and motorists at the bypass. Those few cases are normally reported,” he added.

His statement came just a day after a story about robbery at the bypass was aired on local media as well as social platforms. According to the story, a band of thugs were filmed robbing motorists along the bypass next to NHC estate before escaping into Kibera slums using a dirt path between NHC and Jonathan Ng’eno estate.

Mr Juma, however, reiterated that such are isolated cases that should not be used to brand the area as insecure.

“We had insecurity issues before the road was constructed but now we can say that everything is under control because police officers from Lang’ata and Mugumoini are always quick to act. There are only isolated cases which cannot be magnified to mean that things are not in control,” he said.
