Motorists using the Gilgil-Nairobi Highway have lamented that even though the newly erected speed bumps will help in reducing the number of deaths due to speeding by motorists, the lack of warnings make them clash into each other.

“Previously we did not have speed bumps here and they are barely two weeks old. For new drivers who come at a high speeds, they end up hitting the bumps or bumping into each other since there are no signs indicating that there are bumps ahead,” said Samuel Maina, a driver.

He cited that there have been increased cases of vehicles ramming into each other especially during the night.

“No one expected the bumps there. It is unwise to put the bumps there especially during the night. They should put the signs warning that there are bumps ahead. This will make the drivers cautious when they reach here,” said Benson Mbugua, a community leader.

The speed bumps had been put there after increased cases of hit and run which forced the area residents to hold a series of demonstrations.

Gilgil Member of Parliament Nderitu Mathenge said there was an urgent need for speed bumps since more than four people had died from accidents there.

“We will talk to the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) for them to consider rectifying this mess. This will help prevent vehicles from bumping into each other,” he said.
