According to Mazloum Abdi, the commander of the Kurdish fighters in Syria, planning for the dangerous operation started at least 5 months ago.

The terror tsar movements were tracked and intelligence provided by Iraqi officials to the United States of America.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was said to be suffering from diabetes as he moved to Idlib, trying to look for a place to hide.

He kept changing locations between Syria and Iraq.

After ascertaining where he was hiding, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) alerted the Defence Department.

US President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence were informed about the Islamic State's leader's possible hideout.

"By Thursday afternoon, the president and I were informed there was a high probability he would be at the compound in Idlib province,” the US vice-president, Mike Pence said in a TV interview.

President Trump gave the green light for the operation to take out Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on Saturday.

The strike force started the journey to Idlib, where al-Baghdadi's compound was said to be located at around 5 p.m.

Planes carrying the commandos fly very low, possibly to avoid their detection and hide their radar signature.

After disgorging from the planes that carried them, the strike force blew a hole in one of the walls so as to gain entrance and avoid the booby-trapped entrance.

They came under tremendous fire but were able to take out the Isis fighters responsible for the fire.

Dogs were unleashed on Baghdadi who ran into a dead-end tunnel where he detonated a suicide vest before the menacing dogs could reach him.

One of the dogs was injured as it made for the Islamic State leader.
