Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital director Dr John Kibosia has urged the national government to increase funding in the mother and baby department for them to improve infrastructure.

He says the funding should also help in hiring of more staff to meet the high number of women giving birth due to the free maternal health care that was initiated by the Jubilee government.

Speaking at the hospital on Wednesday, Dr Kibosia said that the hospital as been overstretched beyond its capacity since it serves patients from the North Rift and Western regions.

"The number of expectant mothers visiting our facility has overwhelmingly increased after the jubilee government came to power and declared free maternal services. We receive 60 patients per day wanting to deliver and we cannot handle them appropriately due to the few staff we have," he said.

He said the number of babies being born in the facility per month has increased from the previous 700 babies per month to 1800 babies.

"The free maternal health care services are a good idea since it has drastically reduced maternal deaths due to complications during birth by over 60 per cent. I urge the national government to set aside more funds to hire nurses and improve infrastructure in the mother and baby department in order for us to serve the ever increasing patients with ease.

He challenged county governments to ensure that they equip their hospitals for them to offer maternal health care services which will help in the decongestion of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
