Cheruiyot claimed that Deputy President William Ruto saved Matiang'i from impeachment in November, last year after he was named in the Ruaraka land saga. Matiang'i was the Education CS at the time.

Responding to the remarks in Nyamira County on Sunday, Matiang'i rubbished the claims, with Etale now throwing his weight behind the CS, doubting the validity of the senator's remarks.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Etale noted that had Matiang'i not countered the claims, then the incoming opposition, in an apparent reference to Ruto and his team, would have carried the day.

"Supposing Dr Fred Matiang'i was not present at the funeral in Nyamira where the Senator of Kericho Aaron was making wild allegations against him, those present would have believed the lies," he said.

He also rubbished the remarks as just another line of propaganda being sold out by the team for political mileage, branding it a desperate lot.

"I think the incoming opposition is trying so hard to peddle lies and sell unsellable propaganda to the masses. They are a desperate lot," he added.

Cheruiyot has since claimed that he was instructed by the DP to lead a walkout of Jubilee senators from the House.

This denied a sitting where a report that would have implicated Matiang'i and Education PS Belio Kipsang quorum, leading to the report by the Senate Public Accounts Committee to be thrown out.

Ruto has since announced his presidential ambitions for the 2022 general elections.
