Speaking in his office during a courtesy call by the International Lake Environment Committee Foundation (ILECF) delegation from Japan, Ruto said Lake Nakuru is a big asset to Nakuru County and the entire country as it is the home of flamingos.

Ruto observed the importance of conservation in and out of the lake saying that the cleaning of the sewerage system around the lake has and will continue to facilitate the increase of flamingos which is also a big booster to tourism.

“Without good sewerage system, flamingos which are our pride will be cleared from Lake Nakuru,” he said.

Ruto also noted the flooding of Lake Nakuru has occurred due to the ongoing conservation within the Mau forest.

He said over 51 per cent of the Mau forest is within Nakuru County and is undergoing conservation.

The ILECF delegation is currently touring the sewerage system unit around Lake Nakuru that was set up for sewage disposal in Nakuru.

The chairman, Masahisa Nakamura, called on the national and county governments to make waste management mainstream in their agenda citing lots of challenges facing waste disposal.

He also said that it is important for the county government to bring up waste management around Lake Nakuru as a case subject in international debates at a forum organised by the foundation next year in Indonesia.
