Addressing the press in Athi River town on Wednesday, the workers said they were being paid peanuts as compared to their colleagues from other cement plants in the region.

In a statement presented through their representative, John Odhiambo, the workers claimed they were being paid according to a payment plan designed 15 years ago.

"We are concerned that the payment scheme still being put into effect by the Rhino Cement Company is that designed 15 years ago, hence does not put into consideration high inflation rates experienced in the country," reads the statement in part.

Odhiambo disclosed that the company was the poorest in terms of salaries and wages’ payments among other terms and conditions of work which he referred to as substandard.

He condemned the information given by one of the senior directors on a TV straight talk program recently which he claimed were mere public relations stating the payments packages which the director said the company offers its workers were false.

The workers said the intent of the next week's planned strike was to push the company's management to effect payments which the official claimed on TV that it offers the employees.

Efforts to reach the management for reaction hit a snag since a junior officer at the company said relevant persons were unavailable to address press on the matter.
