Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Thursday visited the Kisumu port which has been under renovations for months.
The African Union Infrastructure Envoy made an impromptu tour of the site, and visited the berthing bay, ahead of the port's official launch set for August.
He was accompanied by Nyanza Regional Commissioner James Kianda, area Deputy Governor Mathew Owilli, and Kenya Railways acting Managing Director Philip Mainga.
However, deeper details of the visit remain scanty as the media was denied access to the facility.
Reports indicate that Odinga also inspected the MV Uhuru Cargo ship.
The ship which has been stalled for years was successfully repaired a week ago.
The former Premier also visited the site where the dredger being used in the ongoing hyacinth elimination is docked.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to host five African Presidents for the launch of the port in August, with the port being placed under 24-hour-surveillance by the police.
The renovation of the port is part of President Uhuru Kenyatta's efforts to cash in on the blue economy and ease business with neighbouring countries around Lake Victoria.
A few weeks ago, Raila hosted Uhuru for supervision of ongoing repairs at the port.
