A spot check today showed maneuvering in the suburbs of the town searching for rooms with some of them even losing hope after failing to secure any.

According to Vane Nyaboke, a student at Mt. Kenya University Kisii branch, she has been looking for a rental room since Thursday but her efforts were futile since most of the rooms had been booked.

“I have moved all rounds since yesterday in search for a room but no answers yet. There is a serious housing crisis in town and I don’t know how long it will take,” she said.

However, the situation was even appalling to Kisii University students when those who hoped to get accommodation in the institution’s premises were denied access following the new accommodation policy that excludes senior students from the program.

Justin Mburu, a third year Education student said the policy had directly affected more than 2000 senior students who are now homeless.

“It’s a sad moment for majority of us since we have no alternatives. Many of us come from humble backgrounds and the institution should have considered that fact,” he argued.

He urged the universities management to offer them alternative solution to the menace as they continue searching vacant rooms.

The housing crisis in the South Nyanza town has been attributed to exponential growth of population that majorly constitutes students from various institutions such as Gusii Institute, Africa Nazarene among others.
