Currently, the drivers are paying Sh200 per day, a figure that they disputed given the hard economic situation in the country.

A group of taxi drivers on Tuesday said they will petition the Kisii County assembly to consider lowering the fee since most of them have either been harassed or fined heavily by taxi collectors following their failure to comply.

They said the business was slow in Kisii town since most customers preferred using motorcycles, making it difficult for many of them to even feed their families at home.

“To be very honest, it is difficult for us to raise Sh200 on a daily basis. We will petition the county assembly to consider reducing the fee so that it accommodates many of us who are very poor,” said John Mochama.

“The current economic situation cannot even allow us to perform our family obligations such as paying school fees for our young ones. The money we get is very little since most potential customers prefer using motorbikes,” Mochama added.

They suggested the figure to be reduced to at most Sh100 which will be fair for most of them and urged the county government to honor their suggestion.
