Residents who live near Lake Victoria shores have been asked to plant trees to reduce siltation and pollution of the lake.
A Lake Victoria Environmental Management Project (Lvemp II), official said that the trees will help prevent erosion and reduce its adverse effects on the lake.
The project communication officer Nicholas Manyolo said his organisation will also purchase exhausters to help in sewerage rehabilitation.
“Our projects targets residents around the lake regions and catchment areas to ensure that all run offs channeled to the lakes are clean,” he said at a consultative meeting in Kisumu.
Lvemp II is also planning to buy a machine to help weed away the hyacinth from the lake as a measure of mitigating environmental stress around the lake region.
“The problem of the hyacinth is deep-rooted and we want to acquire a machine that will help weed away the crop,” he said.
Manyolo said that all the participating communities will be given the opportunity to manage the trees after being planted.
“We want to involve these communities in all our plans and that includes letting them manage the planting and supervision of the trees’ growth.”
The project, Manyolo said, is already being implemented in Kisumu, Homa Bay, and is underway in Bomet County.
The project is funded by the World Bank through the International Development Association (IDA) and East Africa Community partner states.
