The Ministry of Education and the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) have raised concern after it emerged that students are no longer applying for loans.
The number of students from middle-level colleges applying for the loans has significantly gone down.
The Board has now revealed that only half of the 43,000 students who had previously applied for the loans have reapplied. It remains unclear why the rest of the students are not willing to reapply for the loan.
The different stakeholders in the education sector are now wondering whether the students who did not apply for the loans have dropped out of school.
Helb Chief Executive Officer Charles Ringera said that the institution has received only 17,980 online application forms so far.
“We do not know where the other students are because we allocated them money previously and they are slow at making applications for subsequent years and this is a major challenge for us,” said Ringera, as quoted by the Standard.
The officials from the Ministry of Education have also raised their concerns over the reducing number of students applying for the loans.
In the past, students have been asking the government to increase their loan allocations.
