Manchester United center back Chris Smalling is set to leave the Red Devils for Serie A side AS Roma on a €3 million loan.
The player has not been having it easy at the club since the acquisition of Harry Maguire from Leicester City at a cost of £80 million in the summer.
The deal is set to be sealed on Wednesday evening, with the Italian giants free to sign him permanently at the end of the season.
This comes as a relief to the 29-year-old whose fate at Old Trafford was uncertain considering that the Premier League transfer window had already been shut.
However, since the European window doesn't close until September 2, his agents and those of United and Roma still have sometime to conclude the deal.
Initial attempts by Everton FC were rejected by United, in what appears to have been United head coach Olegunnar Solksjaer's unwillingness to lose the player to a Premier League rival.
This is with consideration that Solksjaer decided to retain him despite having seven more defenders.
He is expected to join his teammate Alexis Sanchez who has also been linked to a possible move to AC Milan, another Italian giant.
Milan has also expressed interest in Smalling.
