The Kenya Red Cross Society Nakuru branch manager Peter Chacha has disclosed that over 30 volunteers will take part in an operation to mitigate the effects of El Nino.
Speaking Tuesday to the media in Nakuru town, Chacha said the humanitarian organisation has rolled out measures to counter the effects of El Nino.
“Apart from enlisting over 30 volunteers, we will also monitor the situation seriously by providing medical care to those who will be affected,” said Chacha.
The manager urged other stakeholders in the El Nino mitigation operation to work closely to provide the necessary help.
“There is need for organisations to work with the Red Cross in mitigating the effects of the rains,” he said.
“Disaster management is not a one off event. Disasters can strike any moment, thus we must explore ways of lessening the effects of El Nino,” he added.
The decision by the Red Cross is seen as effort to consolidate the county government efforts in mitigating the effects of El Nino after it set Sh2 billion for the rains.
He pointed out that various stakeholders were involved in broadening the scope of the mitigation operation and urged for multi-sectoral approach.
Besides providing volunteers, the KRCS branch is aiming at identifying various hotspots in the county where more efforts will be channeled.
