Parents in Nakuru have called on NACADA Chairman John Mututho to help ensure that the students do not consume drugs and alcohol during the national drama festivals. The parents cited that majority of the students who went for the festivals would take advantage of their freedom and end up consuming liquor. “We are calling on Mututho to provide enough police and security forces to ensure that the children do not sneak in alcohol in the festivals,” said Ben Macharia. They were speaking to the press in Nakuru town during the opening ceremony of the National Drama and Music festivals. Margaret Nyawira cited that there should be more surveillance for the students. She called for more security personnel to be deployed to the schools hosting the festivals. Speaking in a telephone interview, Mututho advised parents to counsel their children who will be participating in the festivals. “Talk to them and explain about the alcohol problem. It might help if they know that their parents do not support such habits. It’s also good for parents to talk to the teachers who will be taking care of their children,” he added.
