Police in Thika town are investigating a case where a gang of three men allegedly carjacked a PSV Matatu, robbing passengers of their valuables, before escaping with unknown sum of money on Sunday evening.
It is reported that the armed robbers hijacked the matatu on its way to Nairobi from Kilimambogo, and threatened to shoot if the passengers and the driver would not comply with their demands.
According to Peter Njoroge, the Matatu conductor, the three gunmen boarded the vehicle at Kilimambogo, and were each carrying a backpack and strategically sat in the vehicle.
The tout said that one of the gunmen sat with the driver, while the other at the back seat, as the third sat close to him, near the door.
On reaching along the Thika-Garrisa road, Njoroge said that the one close to him pointed a gun to him, demanding him to surrender the money hustled the whole day.
He said that all the passengers surrendered mobile phones, money and watches, while the tout surrendered all the money he had hustled the whole day.
The gang at the back also pointed gun to the passengers and he was as well ordering passengers to surrender all their valuables and any attempt to hide you will be considered lifeless.
Njoroge said that immediately they called the area police, who availed themselves immediately but could not manage to make an arrest, with all the victims reporting at the Thika police station.
Following the incident, Thika west OCPD Shadrack Maithya confirmed the incident and assured that he has launched a crackdown to apprehend those involved.
He warned motorists to always frisk their passengers before boarding a vehicle to avoid recurrence of the same.
