Raila took the controversial oath in protest of his loss to President Uhuru Kenyatta, whose re-election in the 2017 general poll he rejected, insisting that he was rigged out.

However, the event was snubbed by his National Super Alliance (NASA) co-principals, who accused him of sneaking to the function and also taking the oath despite an earlier agreement that he would shelve the plan.

In an interview with Citizen TV on Friday, the former Prime Minister rubbished excuses given by Musalia Mudavadi, Moses Wetangula and Kalonzo Musyoka, saying that they never wanted to accompany him for the oath.

He stated that nobody was prevented from attending the function, and whoever was not there did it out of their own decision.

"The fact of the matter is that whoever was not there wasn’t there because they did not want to be there and not because they were denied. They said this was dangerous," he said in the interview at his Opoda Farm home in Bondo.

Raila also dismissed claims that he switched off his phone moments before joining his supporters and allies at Uhuru Park for the oath.

Raila said that instead, those who are claiming that his phone went off are the ones who could not be reached to attend the function.

"I did not switch off the phone. The phones which were switched off are known. But we wanted to reach them," he added.

The then Attorney-General Prof Githu Muigai warned that the oath would amount to high treason, which is punishable by death.
